Poem For Ossie
In the midst of your muse until the end.
How interesting the title of your last film-
"Retirement."
You committed to the other half of your
breath in the earlier of winter ~ your wife~
1948 and God would request your presence
home in the last month of winter ~ February~
2005.
You strived to "Do The Right Thing" and was
far from being in the category of "Grumpy
Old Men."
You carried the epitome of being a human
from film to stage to television.
You were one "BAAD ASSSSS" of an actor~
creating the path for other men of color to
follow.
The essence of theater and Hollywood tasted
that of class whenever you were in the mix
of a production.
A style one would wish were a bottled drink.
Never did one imagine that two lovebirds
would be on opposite ends of the world when
the death angel chose to sing its song into
one of your ears.
By chance far from your thoughts that you
would speak with life one last time behind
the walls of a hotel room rooted in the body
of a city that at one time did not want colored
folks around or near ~ Miami Beach, FL but
have always benefited from the pretty shades
of brown.
The essence of racial justice had your support
from beginning to end.
Of course, "In This Life Together," you and Ruby
Dee were the mirror image of strong love, tried
love, true love, honest love and don't see too much
of kind of love shared between two earthly beings.
Now, "Gone Are The Days" of seeing two souls
walking into any room hand-in-hand reflecting the
look of sweet music.
Hence, it is at this moment, we give thanks for
the beauty of memories that will be forever priceless.

*Rest In Peace Ossie Davis
